Download or update Birthday Calendar + from the App Store. On your Home Screen the app appears as Birthdays.

Your events and photos live on the device by default.
Use Backup in Settings before switching phones or installing a new build over an existing install when possible.
Restoring from an iCloud backup you created in the App brings events and photos back together.
